The 2014 legislature completed its work this past Friday and they won't be retuning to the Capitol until January 2015. As we reflect back on the results, we can be glad of progress made on a number of issues and understand clearly our challenges ahead.
Probably the most important victory of 2014 was passage of a 5 percent increase for home and community based service providers. This was a significant and major success for the entire disability community. The biggest disappointment of 2014 was that absolutely nothing concrete happened with the thorny problem of the Medical Assistance (MA) income and asset standards and its related "spend-down". It is clear, MA policy forces people with brain injury deep into poverty and addressing this must be our primary focus for next year.
Thank you to all of our advocates for their time, energy and commitment to advancing these important issues and for participating in our democracy. None of this would be possible without you. Take just a minute to catch your breath and then let's get back to work. Join us at our office on Saturday, June 7, at 11:30 a.m. at our upcoming Citizen Advocate Academy Legislative Wrap-up. We will celebrate our advocacy efforts, discuss in more detail what happened at the Capitol and begin planning for next year.
